Clothing Moth PRevention & Storage

Cashmere is an incredibly breathable and versatile fibre that, depending on the weight of the yarn, can be enjoyed year-round. On cool summer nights, it's the perfect time to grab a cashmere shawl or cardigan and wrap yourself in that extra layer of warmth. However, when the weather warms up, you can tuck away your heavier cashmere garments for the season, ensuring they stay in great condition until the colder months return.

If you’ve been noticing holes on the front or sleeves of your sweaters, you most likely have clothing moths hiding in your closet.

Don’t give up and let these hungry pests destroy your cashmere and wool.

When To Store?

To prevent moths from returning, store only clean garments in closets and dressers.
Our motto is: “Only put clean clothes in a clean closet”. Once an item has been worn, keep it out of enclosed spaces—hang it on a wooden hanger on the back of a door where it gets light, movement, and air. Wear 4–8 times, then launder before returning it to storage.

Protect it.

Ever wonder why moth holes tend to appear on the front and wrist areas of your sweaters?

While moths are often associated with natural fibres, they’re actually more drawn to dark, quiet spaces, laying their eggs on small spills, sweat and body oils left behind after wearing.
We suggest placing pheromone traps in storage areas or wherever moth damage has occurred.

Use The Winter Weather

Use winter cold to jump-start the process. Collect all cashmere and wool garments—sweaters, robes, mittens, hats, scarves, wool coats, and even rugs—and place them sealed in a zip pouch or plastic bin in an unheated space such as a garage, porch, balcony, or the trunk of your car. Leave them to freeze for one to two weeks.

Deep clean

Thoroughly vacuum and wipe out all cupboards, dressers, and closets where these items are stored. Don’t forget to vacuum all your rugs!

Wash all garments before putting them away again (see our straightforward How to Wash Your Cashmere Reel).

What To store your Cashmere in?

To store your cashmere properly, use breathable storage options that protect it from moisture, heat, and pests. Here are some great choices:

  1. Breathable Fabric Bags: Zippered fabric bags are ideal, as they allow air circulation while keeping dust and dirt away.

  2. Cloth Bins: A cloth bin offers breathable storage while keeping your cashmere neatly organized.

  3. Drawer or Closet Shelf: Storing cashmere in a drawer or on a closet shelf is also a good option as long as it’s in a cool, dry place.

  4. Avoid Plastic Containers: Plastic bins trap moisture and heat, which can damage the fibers over time.

Remember to keep your cashmere out of direct sunlight to avoid yellowing, in a dry space to prevent mildew, and in a clean environment to protect against moths.
